How do I print large print lined paper?

Choose the line spacing, check the box if you want Name and Date at the top, choose a paper size and press download. You get a page of solid black lines from margin to margin. Print as many copies as you need and keep them in a folder.

The lines are heavy, about two points thick, and pure black. APH, the American Printing House for the Blind, says gray should never be used in documents for people with low vision, so there are no pale rules to strain after. The margins are an inch on every side, so nothing is lost when the page goes into a binder or a hole punch.

If the white page is glaring, choose the cream background, which gives the same dark lines on softer paper. APH lists ivory, eggshell and light beige as suitable papers for people who find white glaring, and recommends black text on them.

The Name and Date header uses the type size you choose, so it is easy to read at the top of the page. You do not have to use it. Leave it off if you want to write a letter or a shopping list.

What line spacing is best for low vision?

It depends on the size of your writing, not just on your sight.

Start with three-quarters of an inch, which is the default. If you find yourself running letters over the line, or crowding into a corner, move up to one inch. If the writing looks lost in the space, drop to half an inch. A page of one-inch lines holds only a handful of lines, so print several sheets for a long letter.

Some people write one letter or number per line, in very big print, to help remember something such as a phone number. One-inch lines suit that well.

What pen and paper work best on bold lined paper?

Use a dark, wide pen. A black felt-tip or a bold gel pen gives a strong line against the printed rules. Pencil can be faint, and a soft, thick pencil is easier to see than a hard, sharp one.

Choose matte paper. RNIB, the UK's Royal National Institute of Blind People, says glossy paper causes reflection and advises paper thick enough that print does not show through from the other side. Standard office paper is fine for most pens. If you use a marker that bleeds through, print on a heavier stock.

Good light matters as much as the paper. Put a lamp on the side opposite the writing hand, so your hand does not shade the line, and lay the paper on a plain, darker surface to reduce glare.

Who uses wide lined paper?

People with macular degeneration and other kinds of low vision who write letters and notes by hand. Caregivers who leave written instructions. Teachers who prepare handwriting practice for students who need extra space. Residents in care homes who want to copy a favorite verse or keep a diary, and activity staff who want a plain sheet for a group writing activity.
