What is a large print alphabet chart?
It is one sheet with all twenty-six letters, each in its own box, drawn with thick strokes in black on white. Each box shows the capital and lowercase form side by side, so you can match the two.
The type is a plain sans serif without italics, in line with the American Printing House for the Blind guidance for readers with low vision. There are no pictures or decorations behind the letters, so nothing competes with the shapes. You can read more in what is large print.
Who uses a large alphabet chart?
People use a chart like this for many reasons. Readers with low vision use it as a reference they can see from arm's length. Teachers and parents use it in classrooms and at home for children learning letters. Adults who are relearning to read or write after an illness, or learning English, use it as a reminder of letter shapes. Care staff and family can pin one by a desk or a bed as a simple aid.

How do I use the chart?
Pick your paper size and download the PDF. On 11 x 17 inch paper the boxes are big enough to read from across a table.
- Point to a letter and say its name, then find the matching lowercase form.
- Trace over a letter with a finger to feel the stroke order.
- Copy letters onto large print lined paper, one per line, to practice writing large.
- Pair it with the large print number chart for a full set of symbols on a wall.
Laminate the sheet or slip it into a plastic sleeve if it will be handled a lot. Once the letters are familiar, a child or an adult learner can move on to counting with the large print number chart, then to times tables with the large print multiplication chart.
