Who wrote I Need Thee Every Hour and when?
Annie S. Hawks (1836-1918) wrote the words in 1872 in Brooklyn, New York, according to Wikipedia. She attended the Hanson Place Baptist Church, where the pastor was Robert Lowry, himself a hymn writer, who had encouraged her to write hymns. Lowry wrote the music and, in his own words, added the chorus to make the hymn more serviceable. Hawks said the hymn was prophetic rather than expressive of her own experience at the time. Wikipedia says it had been translated into more languages than any other modern hymn by the time of her death. It is her best-known work of more than 400 hymns.
